July 2: Departure Day, New York to Oviedo
Group Meeting:
At 6:00 PM, meet your leader and fellow students at the Iberia Airlines check-in counter (outside of security) at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This is the official start of your Putney program!
Group Flight:
The group will fly on Iberia Airlines flight #6252 departing New York (JFK) at 9:00 PM on July 2, arriving in Madrid, Spain (MAD), at 10:15 AM local time on July 3. The group will continue on Iberia Airlines flight #0488 departing Madrid at 11:40 AM and arriving in Oviedo, Spain (OVD), at 12:50 PM local time on July 3 (9 hours, 45 minutes en route).
July 3–6: Llanes
Begin the program with five days on Spain’s northern coast in the Asturias region, with an orientation to Spanish language and culture in Llanes. Participate in language lessons, get to know your group, visit a local fiesta, take a surf lesson, or play soccer on the beach with Spanish friends.
July 7–9: Potes
Travel south to the snow-capped Picos de Europa. Hike and ride horseback on spectacular trails, continue your language immersion, and sample regional Spanish cuisine.
July 10–13: Madrid
Explore the lively streets of Madrid, visit museums — the Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen Bornemisza — sample wonderful food at a sidewalk café, and see a show at a taberna de flamenco. Take a day trip to Segovia to see its Roman aqueduct or to Toledo to visit the Alcázar and ancient synagogue.
July 14–18: Day Stay in Albacete
Immerse yourself in local culture by pairing with a Spanish teenager. This is an opportunity to experience Spanish life as a local. Practice your language skills as you join in their daily activities, meet the family, and form lasting friendships. During this week, you will be with your Spanish brother or sister during the day, and come back together as a group in the evening.
July 19–21: Peñíscola
Head east and spend your final three days in a small town on the Mediterranean coast. Relax, enjoy a beach picnic, and celebrate your experience with new friends.
July 22: Return Day, Valencia to New York
Group Flight:
The group will fly on Iberia Airlines flight #8979 departing Valencia, Spain (VLC), at 1:15 PM local time on July 22, arriving in Madrid (MAD) at 2:15 PM local time on July 22. The group will continue on Iberia Airlines flight #6253 departing Madrid at 4:35 PM local time on July 22, returning to the International Arrivals Area of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 6:55 PM on July 22 (11 hours, 45 minutes en route).
July 22: Airport Hotel
One of your trip leaders will stay overnight with the group. If you have reserved and paid for a hotel room, we will send you an email one week prior to departure with details about the hotel reservation.
